General Prerequisites
The course intends to introduce chemical engineering students to contemporary biotechnology with emphasis on biomaterials. Tha latter family of materials constitutes a significant part of research and technology at the international level. The class targets the comprehension of basic principles of the science of materials and engineering processes involved in synthetic materials and material products of engineering processes.
Learning Outcomes
The course intends to introduce chemical engineering students to contemporary metal-linked and metal-free genetic engineering and biotechnology with emphasis on biomaterials. Tha latter family of materials constitutes a significant part of research and technology at the international level. The class targets the comprehension of basic principles of the science of biology, biological materials and biological engineering processes involved in processes and technologies of genetic engineering.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The theoretical part of the course includes the following: • Building blocks of living organisms in the presence and absence of metal ions • Inorganic cellular metabolism and need for gene regulation • Metal-ion metabolism in bacteria, metal ion metabolism in animals • Processes in living beings, genetic changes in plants and animals • Genetic engineering in modern science, genetic engineering and technology • Reactor biological engineering, metabolic pathways, bio-materials (applications in pharmacy, medicine and environmental engineering) The experimental part of the course includes the following experiments: 1. Cultures of aerobic bacteria of the species Escherichia coli, coating bacterial cells on plates 2. Bacterial culture E. coli small scale DNA isolation 3. Digestion of DNA using restriction enzymes 4. Preparation and maintenance of competent cells (competent cells) 5. Cell transformation in E. coli 6. Bioinformatics 7. Determination of the concentration of cells (hemocytometer) 8. Design of primers for sequencing and amplification by PCR (primer design)
