General Prerequisites
The course intends to introduce chemical engineering students to contemporary biotechnology with emphasis on biomaterials. Tha latter family of materials constitutes a significant part of research and technology at the international level. The class targets the comprehension of basic principles of the science of materials and engineering processes involved in synthetic materials and material products of engineering processes.
Learning Outcomes
This course will provide students with recent knowledge of genetic engineering. At the end of the course, students will be able to • understand and critically explain the concept of genetic engineering, including chemical and molecular biological techniques, applications and limitations • have knowledge (theoretical and experimental) of technological tools (including computational models) and strategies used in genetic engineering • understand applications of recombinant DNA technology and genetic engineering. from academic and industrial perspective • demonstrate the ability to design recombinant biomolecules and apply information extracted from a variety of sources including journal articles, technical bulletins, product manuals, and drug information sheet to solve problems. • apply acquired knowledge in problem solving, in practice to their future research and be in a position to delve into issues related to industrial problems linked to contemporary (bio)chemical engineering, and biomedical diagnostics and therapeutics.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The theoretical part of the course includes the following: • Building blocks of living organisms in the presence and absence of metal ions • Inorganic cellular metabolism and need for gene regulation • Metal-ion metabolism in bacteria, metal ion metabolism in animals • Processes in living beings, genetic changes in plants and animals • Genetic engineering in modern science, genetic engineering and technology • Reactor biological engineering, metabolic pathways, bio-materials (applications in pharmacy, medicine and environmental engineering) The experimental part of the course includes the following experiments: 1. Cultures of aerobic bacteria of the species Escherichia coli, coating bacterial cells on plates 2. Bacterial culture E. coli small scale DNA isolation 3. Digestion of DNA using restriction enzymes 4. Preparation and maintenance of competent cells (competent cells) 5. Cell transformation in E. coli 6. Bioinformatics 7. Determination of the concentration of cells (hemocytometer) 8. Design of primers for sequencing and amplification by PCR (primer design)
