Training on putting together and executing tree breeding programs 3. Training on establishin genetic trials, evaluation of results and capitalization on the results for the establishment of production plantations 4. Knowledge and training on advanced generation breeding strategies - structure and management of breeding populations 5. Applications of genomics and molecular markers for marker assisted selection 6. Understanding of the applications of genetic engineering on forest trees

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction. Breeding objectives and programmes. Variation of species, populations, stands, trees and its origin, study methods. Prov¬enance, terminology, importance to breeding. Artificial selection, methods of its application in forest tree breeding. Genetic testing, estimation of heritability and genetic gain. Vegetative propagation, methods, topophysis, consequences. Hybridization (natural - artificial), aims, methods. Introduction of exotics, methods, species selection. Mutations - biotechnology. Breeding for disease resistance and wood quality.

Description
Weekly tests on the material taught during the laboratory courses. Final written exam that includes multiple choice questions and solving of problems on the topics taught in the laboratory courses. Success in the laboratory exams is a prerequisite for taking the exam on the course that includes only questions requiring long answers.
