Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will: a) have acquired basic knowledge on aquaculture in general, the fish farming production systems, the technologies and the methods used and their environmental impacts, b) have understood the modern methods of farming freshwater fish species, such as trouts, carps and eels. c) have been taught specific chapters for each of the above fish species, on the technologies of their production and the necessary technical infrastructure for their breeding.

Course Content (Syllabus)
In general about aquaculture, criteria of selection appropriate species for aquaculture, suitable places and waters for aquaculture, aquaculture production systems. Description of extensive aquaculture (lakes - rivers), semi-intensive aquaculture (lagoons - coastal lakes) and technologies of intensive aquaculture. Status of fish farming in Greece and internationally. Strength - Weakness analysis of aquaculture in Greece, Optimization of the existing technologies, rational management of inland water fish farms, optimization of the interactions between aquacultures and environment. Trout farming: General information, criteria of selection the appropriate locations for trout farming, quantity and quality of water demand, necessary facilities, artificial reproduction of trout, diet and nutrition and common diseases. Carp farming: General information about carps, appropriate locations for carp farming, water quality and quantity for carp culture, types and constructions of fish ponds and tanks. Types of artificial reproduction, (natural, semi extensive, controlled and artificial), breeding, diet, common diseases. Eel farming: General information about eels, water quality and quantity for eel culture, types of eel culture, diet aod eels, common diseases.
