Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able: 1. To realize the timeliness, the range and the catholicity of the patriarchal teaching. 2. To understand the international environment in which the patriarchal teaching is articulated. 3. To be aware of the importance of the Orthodox Church’s witness in the modern world. 4. To creatively use the patriarchal teaching while meeting with people of other Christian denominations and other religions. 5. To evaluate the key role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the context of inter – Orthodox and inter – Christian relations.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is one of the leading figures not only of the Orthodox but also of the entire Christian world. His patriarchy is a milestone for the modern history of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The subject of this course is the understanding of Orthodox Christianity today through the teaching of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Outline of lectures: 1. The Ecumenical Patriarchate throughout history Α΄. 2. The Ecumenical Patriarchate throughout history Β΄. 3. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew’s biography (His ecclesiastical and scientific work). 4. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the Greek minority in Istanbul. 5. The Ecumenical Patriarchate within the Orthodox world. The Ecumenical Patriarch as “primus inter pares” Α΄. 6. The Ecumenical Patriarchate within the Orthodox world. The Ecumenical Patriarch as “primus inter pares” Β΄. 7. The inter – Christian diakonia of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The contribution of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Α΄. 8. The inter – Christian diakonia of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The contribution of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Β΄. 9. Ecumenical Patriarchate and inter – religious dialogues. The contribution of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to the encounter with other religions. 10. Ecumenical Patriarchate and the environment. The “Green Patriarch”. 11. The modern world through the patriarchal teaching (secularization, globalization, fanaticism, nationalism, racism). 12. Ecumenical Patriarchate and social problems. The social dimension of the patriarchal teaching (social justice, poverty, inequality). 13. Ecumenical Patriarchate and human rights (religious freedom, religious tolerance. Halki Theological School as a case study).
