Learning Outcomes
The course Introduction to the Old Testament informs about content, formation, history and theology of the Old Testament By the end of this course students should be able to: • to offer written or oral comprehensive answers regarding the historical or philological issues and the theological focus of the individual books of the NT Canon • to trace down and analyze the factors that led to the composition of the NT texts and to the formation of the Canon • to develop their critical and analytical thought through the detection and the comprehension of the factors that led to the formation of the oral and written tradition of the early Church • to apply the acquired knowledge in the exegesis of NT texts / passages • to compare and connect the theological teaching of the NT texts with currents questions and discussions PRACTICE - to present comprehensively and thoroughly the history of the NT text - to connect particular witnesses of the manuscript tradition and of ancient translation to particular types of the NT text - to discern and explain the main symbols of the critical apparatus of a critical edition of the NT

Course Content (Syllabus)
THEORY The course offers a) basic information regarding the New Testament text and its history, the formation of the New Testament Canon, the editions and translations of the New Testament, and b) a short introduction to the books of the New Testament (outline and content, historical, philological and exegetical issues, theological message of each book) PRACTICE (NT text criticism) In the practical part of the course the following topics will be discussed: a) the history of the manuscript tradition of the NT text, b) its major witnesses, c) ancient and modern translations of the NT, d) the critical text of the NT (criteria, text types, editions etc.), and e) the concrete example of the critical edition of the NT by the Münster Nestle-Aland Institute. SCHEDULE THEORY 1st session (a) Introduction to the course – Historical review and content of the “Introduction to the NT” (b) What is the NT and which are the books that make it up (c) Before the NT text: a) the OT as the Scriptures of the early Church and b) the oral traditions about Jesus (δ) Aim and significance of the NT texts 2nd session (a) The Canon of the NT: history and theological significance (b) The non-canonical (“apocryphal”) texts and the “agrapha” (not written) words of Jesus 3rd session (a) The gospels: their genre, purpose and special features (b) The synoptic problem 4th session The synoptic gospels, Part 1: Mark and Matthew 5th session The synoptic gospels, Part 2: Luke The Gospel of John Comparison between John and the Synoptics 6th session Acts of the Apostles Paul in the Acts and in the epistles 7th session 1st & 2nd Thessalonians The question of ancient pseudepigraphy 8th session Galatians Romans 9th session 1st and 2nd Corinthians The Prison Epistles, Part 1: Philippians and Philemon 10th session The Prison Epistles, Part 2: Ephesians, Colossians The Pastorals 11th session Hebrews Catholic Epistles, Part 1: James, 1st & 2nd Peter 12th session Catholic Epistles, Part 2: 1st, 2nd & 3rd John, Jude 13th session The Book of Revelation Evaluation of the course by the class PRACTICE (NT TEXT CRITICISM) 1η meeting Introduction to the practical part of the course – technical information regarding it (tests, assessment methods etc) History of the manuscripts: material, typology of the manuscripts The role of the NT manuscripts in the ancient Church 2nd meeting The most important manuscripts of the NT text – Part 1: the papyri 3rd meeting The most important manuscripts of the NT text – Part 2: the main parchment majuscule codices (Sinaiticus, Vaticanus, Alexandrinus, Beza, Ephraemi rescriptus etc) Intrduction to relative websites (e.g. the website of the Codex Sinaiticus Project) 4th meeting The most important manuscripts of the NT text – Part 3: the minuscule manuscripts Centres of critical editions of the NT text – websites of these projects (e.g. CSNTM, Nestle-Aland Virtual Library etc) 5th Principles and criteria of the critical editions of the NT text Exercises and examples 6th meeting Text types of the NT, Part 1 - Exercises and examples 7th meeting Text types of the NT, Part 2 – The Byzantine text type : Current trend in the research 8th meeting Ancient and modern translations of the NT NT translations into modern Greek 9th meeting Editions of the NT texts in Greece and abroad 10th meeting Introduction to the critical apparatus The case of the 27th critical edition by Nestle-Aland Exercises and examples 11th meeting The critical edition by Nestle-Aland: the symbols on the margins The symbols for the main witnesses of the manuscript tradition Exercises and examples 12th meeting The critical edition by Nestle-Aland: the symbols in the critical text and in the critical apparatus (Part 1) Exercises and examples 13th meeting The critical edition by Nestle-Aland: the symbols in the critical text and in the critical apparatus (Part 2) Exercises and examples

Student Assessment
Description
• Successful participation to the oral exam of the critical apparatus (practice part of the course): 20% of the final grade • Writing of two short assignments that are complementary to the material from the handbook: 20% of the final grade • Successful participation in the written exams of the course: 60% Presupposition for passing the exams is that the students have passed both the oral exams of the practice part of the course as well as the written exams of the theory part (i.e. the students have achieved grade 5 in both of them). In case that a student fails in one of these parts, she/he must repeat this part.
