Learning Outcomes
The course Introduction to the Old Testament informs about content, formation, history and theology of the Old Testament By the end of this course students should be able to:
• to offer written or oral comprehensive answers regarding the historical or philological issues and the theological focus of the individual books of the NT Canon
• to trace down and analyze the factors that led to the composition of the NT texts and to the formation of the Canon
• to develop their critical and analytical thought through the detection and the comprehension of the factors that led to the formation of the oral and written tradition of the early Church
• to apply the acquired knowledge in the exegesis of NT texts / passages
• to compare and connect the theological teaching of the NT texts with currents questions and discussions
PRACTICE
- to present comprehensively and thoroughly the history of the NT text
- to connect particular witnesses of the manuscript tradition and of ancient translation to particular types of the NT text
- to discern and explain the main symbols of the critical apparatus of a critical edition of the NT

Course Content (Syllabus)
THEORY
The course offers a) basic information regarding the New Testament text and its history, the formation of the New Testament Canon, the editions and translations of the New Testament, and b) a short introduction to the books of the New Testament (outline and content, historical, philological and exegetical issues, theological message of each book)
PRACTICE (NT text criticism)
In the practical part of the course the following topics will be discussed: a) the history of the manuscript tradition of the NT text, b) its major witnesses, c) ancient and modern translations of the NT, d) the critical text of the NT (criteria, text types, editions etc.), and e) the concrete example of the critical edition of the NT by the Münster Nestle-Aland Institute.

Student Assessment
Description
• Successful participation to the oral exam of the critical apparatus (practice part of the course): 20% of the final grade
• Writing of two short assignments that are complementary to the material from the handbook: 20% of the final grade
• Successful participation in the written exams of the course: 60%
Presupposition for passing the exams is that the students have passed both the oral exams of the practice part of the course as well as the written exams of the theory part (i.e. the students have achieved grade 5 in both of them). In case that a student fails in one of these parts, she/he must repeat this part.
