Learning Outcomes
With the successful completion of the course student will be able to:
1) recognize, describe, and compare the main features of the extra-canonical texts
2) trace down, evaluate and comment on the process of reception of these texts by the hagiographic and hymnological texts
3) to discern and describe the theological elements of the extra-canonical texts and the ways that these elements are adapted in the theology of the hagiographic and hymnological texts

Course Content (Syllabus)
Students will be introduced to some significant extra-canonical ancient Christian texts, will study the procedures of redaction and diffusion and will investigate their reception in hagiographic and hymnological texts of the ancient Church:
1. Introduction: content, aim of the course, assignments, bibliography
2. Apocrypha and Church tradition, history of research
3. Apocrypha and Christian worship
4. The circulation of apocryphal texts about Virgin Mary and the Apostles in Byzantium. Their adoption in the hagiographic collection of liturgical use
5. The reception of apocrypha in hagiographic works of Byzantine authors: the case of Nicetas David Paphlagon
6. The Protevangelium of James: content, text tradition, biblical influences
7. The Protevangelium of James and its influence on the hagiographic literature and hymnography about Virgin Mary: common vocabulary and ideas
8. Apocrypha on Mary's Dormition: content, text tradition, biblical influences
9. Apocrypha on Mary's Dormition: their influence on the hagiographic literature and hymnography about Virgin Mary
10. Apocryphal Acts of Thecla and Paul: text history and biblical influences

- Written assignment on a topic related to the course. The topics will be announced on the webpage on blackboard. The written assignment must conform to the rules of a written essay as they are described in the document that will be uploaded on the webpage on blackboard (50% of the final grade) - Oral examination (40% of the final grade) - Oral presentation of the assignment (10% of the final grade)
