Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- realize the significance and usefulness of international law in an era characterized by ruptures and transitions.
- comprehend the function and applications of international law, and avoid distorting and unscientific approaches promoted by control and power mechanisms.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Public International Law I (General Part) includes the basic thematic units which are deemed necessary for the understanding of the international legal order. The nature of international law and the institutional and normative formation of the international community are conceptualized through the historical discourse and the evolution of international law. Emphasis is put on the subjects and classical sources of international law, on the contemporary law-making mechanisms, and on the agents of rights and duties in the international legal order. Additionally, thorough examination is provided regarding the relation between the international and the domestic legal orders, as well as the concept of sovereignty under the spectrum of international law. Further examination is provided for the exercise of competencies and jurisdictions in international law, and particularly their respective spatial exercise (ratione loci) according to the international law. Finally, the legal order and the primary organs of the United Nations receive a thorough analysis.

Description
Students are welcome to use Moodle and digital data bases such as Westlaw and Jstor, and retrieve information from the website of the United Nations and the International Court of Justice. Also, they may contact the teaching staff via email.

Student Assessment
Description
Students are assessed at the end of the semester through written examination, which comprises of the solution of an exercise and the answer to a theoretical question. The practical exercise counts from 60% to 80%, and the theoretical questions between 40% and 20% respectively, in the formation of the final grade.
