Learning Outcomes
The successful completion of the course suggests that the students should: a. distinguish between the divergent stages of imprisonment up to the universally established punishment of imprisonment b.be able to discuss the evolution of the legal/juridical field of imprisonment and c. recognise the principles that govern the execution of the penalty of imprisonment according to the European Prison Rules. Furthermore, upon successful completion of the course students possess selected issues of the Greek prison law, practice and policy; its basic principles in particular the objective of serving the sentence; the rights of the inmates and the measures of minimizing the detrimental effects of deprivation of liberty. Knowledge of the empirical research findings regarding the correctional systems for women and minors, as well as, of the problems in the correctional facilities in general and improvement suggestions.

This Course aims to offer a discussion of the main themes of the historical evolution of the punishment of Imprisonment in the West. The elaboration of these themes consists of a discourse on:
a. The early establishment of imprisonment as a place of detention/coercion and eventually punishment.
b. A comparative analysis of the main early prison systems and their transformation.
c. A theoretical elaboration of the principles that govern the conditions of imprisonment (Agency and Structure in Imprisonment-Historical and Comparative analysis).
d. The evolution of imprisonment as a Legal and Juridical Field. Legal Rights of prisoners.
e. The European Prison Rules: Principles.
Furthermore, selected issues of the Greek prison law, practice and policy are discussed; its basic principles in particular the objective of serving the sentence; the rights of the inmates and the measures of minimizing the detrimental effects of deprivation of liberty. Additionally, empirical research design, methodology and findings regarding the correctional systems for women and minors, as well as, the problems in the correctional facilities in general and improvement suggestions are discussed.
