Knowledge of material taught in the course: Introduction to Divine Worship (106Y) is considered necessary.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course a successful student will be able to recognize the three Byzantine Divine Liturgies and when they are celebrated. The student will be informed as per the key issues of scholarly debate and pastoral practice relative to the Liturgy and the various arguments surrounding them.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Survey of the origins, evolution, parallels, structure, theology, and ritual celebration of the three Byzantine Liturgies (Basil, Chrysostom, Presanctified). Protheis – Great Entrance – Anaphora – Communion. Examination of issues pertaining to the authorship, concelebration, the way the Anaphora is recited, etc.
1. Introduction to the course. Eucharistic origins.
2. The Liturgy(-ies) of Basil the Great. Authorship. The time and days it is celebrated.
3. The Liturgy of John Chrysostom. Authorship. Origins – Evolution – Structure.
4. The Prothesis Rite.
5. The “Pro-Anaphora”.
6. The Great Entrance.
7. The Anaphora. The consecration of the precious Gifts.
8. Communion.
9. The Presanctified. Authorship. Origins – Character – Time and days it is celebrated.
10. Structure and teleturgical overview of the Presanctified.
11. The “time” of the Liturgy.
12. Concelebration. The Anaphora and the way it is recited.
13. General discussion, review.

Student Assessment
Description
One two hour written examination given during the exam period with questions derived from the material covered throughout the semester. Consistent classroom attendance and active participation in discussions and in the weekly liturgical Liturgy-Homiletics practicum (Thursday, 8:00-11:00 at the School Chapel) will have a positive bearing on overall assessment.
