Learning Outcomes
Students who attend the course are expected to • familiarise themselves with the particular cultural environment of the Crusader Levant and its specificities • learn the characteristics of the so-called ‘Crusader’ art and its relationship with the pre-existing local artistic traditions • become acquainted with the diverse (‘national’, religious, dogmatic, social, gender) identi-ties, that characterise the Crusader populations, as well as with their reflection on art and material culture • comprehend the role of sponsors - individuals or communities (e.g. monastic orders)- in Crusader art and architecture • to become sensitive to methodological and practical issues related to their field of study • practice their skills to present orally and in written their ideas and arguments

Course Content (Syllabus)
Beginning in the late 11th century, the Crusader movement led to the gradual expansion of Latin Christendom beyond the borders of Western Europe and to the formation of ethnically and reli-giously mixed societies in the Eastern Mediterranean, where Latins -or Franks- mingled with Byzan-tines, Muslims, Jews and Christians of the Levant. This political restructuring and blending of popu-lations had important consequences on the everyday life and the artistic production of both locals and newcomers. With regard to material culture, we evidence the creation of new habits in dietary practices, housing, the construction of buildings (secular and religious), clothing, the method of conducting war, urban and rural organisation etc. These were either introduced unaltered from the Crusader metropoleis in Western Europe or came about through the mingling of Crusader and local populations. As for the artistic production, new centres of artistic production were created in the area, while new artistic traditions, apt to the aesthetic, intellectual and ideological particularities and needs of these societies, were gradually forged. The course aims at examining the specificities of the material culture, architecture and artis-tic production of the Latin Levant, that is of the Crusader polities of the Syro-palestinian coast, Greece (with emphasis on the Peloponnese, Central Greece , Rhodes and Crete), and Cyprus from the 11th to the 15th century. At the same time, it addresses issues focusing on the social circumstances, ideological necessities and aesthetic predilections that were cru-cial in the formation of a particular vocabulary in architecture, artisanal, and artistic produc-tion. Particular emphasis will be given on the projection of the self-concept, that is the iden-tity of diverse social groups or individuals through material culture and patronage of build-ing and works of art.

Description
Each week students are expected to study a select bibliography (in Greek and/or in foreign languages), on which they will present either orally or in written; alternatively they will be asked to prepare a small written essay or short oral presentation on a given subject. Their evaluation will depend on these weekly presentations, their overall ability to present their arguments and to answer questions regarding their readings, as well as on their participa-tion in the discussion that will take place in the seminar. Of particular importance to the final grade is the oral presentation and the written essay they will prepare on a topic relevant to the course’s thematic.
