Course Content (Syllabus)
Presentation of the most important milestones and trends of Byzantine and post-Byzantine Hagiography from the middle-byzantine period onwards 1. The Hagiography of the iconoclastic period 2. New trends : New Saints & Μetaphrasis of the hagiographic texts 3. The New Witnesses (Neomartyrs) of Byzantium 4. The most important writers of hagiographic texts of the 8th and 9th century and their contribution 5. The creation of collections and codification of hagiographic sources 6. The hagiographic crescendo of the 10th century and the Byzantine Encyclopaidism 7. Imperial hagiography : Leo VI the Wise and Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus 8. Niketas David Paphlagon and Symeon Metaphrastes - The Imperial Menologia 9. The hagiographic crisis of the 11th and 12th century 10. The Recovery of Hagiography during the Paleologan period : Constantine Akropolites 11. The Hagiography of Hesychasm 12. The Major hagiographic collections of post-Byzantine period 13.
