Students who attend the course are expected to • Understand the theoretical reflection on the character and the chronological limits of the Classical period of Greek history and the sources on which its historical study is based. • ger familiar with the basic characteristics of the political and social organization of the Greek communities of the period. • Understand the process that has led to the gradual transformation of state institutions and the policies pursued by the then prevailing city-states. • be sensitized to methodological and practical issues that may arise from the researcher's involvement in the field he is studying • Practice the oral and written presentation of their ideas / arguments

The seminar sets out to describe Greek history from the aftermath of the Persian Wars in 478 to the death of Alexander the Great. It combines analysis with narrative, which combines other aspects of Greek life with political and military matters.Main aim of the course is to make a straightforward account, clearly showing the evidence on which it is based. At the same time this approach partly hides the problem concerning those areas and events not covered by the largely Athens-centred evidence. To some extent this has been compensated by using wherever possible epigraphic and numismatic evidence. Συζήτηση επιλεγμένων πηγών. 3η εβδομάδα: Η Πελοπόννησος στις αρχές του 5ου αιώνα. η αντιπαράθεση μεταξύ της Σπάρτης και του Άργους, η εμφάνιση διαφόρων συνοικισμών (συγχώνευση) και ιδιαίτερα οι εξελίξεις των περίπλοκων σχέσεων εντός της Σπάρτης. Ο Θεμιστοκλής, ο Εφιάλτης και οι μεταρρυθμίσεις του στα θεσμικά όργανα, η αντανάκλαση των πολιτικών αλλαγών στην πρώιμη τραγική ποίηση.
