Course Content (Syllabus)
Τhe course concerns the framework of Interbalkan relations during the long 19th century - as well as the 20th century. Throughout the 19th century Balkan states were striving for their national accomplishment, i.e. the ''Great Idea'' of each determined the friendly or hostile relations among them. In particular, the Macedonian issue affected the Greek-Bulgarian , Serbian-Bulgarian and Greek-Serbian relations, the Koutzowallachian (or "Aromunian") issue the Greek-Romanian relations, the transformation of the Hasburg Empire defined the Serbian-Croatian relations. The emergence of the Albanian national movement after 1878 raised the question of the stance of Greeks, Serbs and Montenegrins towards the Albanians and their struggle for statehood. Great Powers got involved in the Balkan Affairs, and it is no coincidence that the Great War broke out in the Balkans. In the Inter-war period Interbalkan relations were determined by the outcome of the World War I. Bulgaria, as a defeated country, claimed Western Thrace, Serbian Macedonia, and South Dobroutsa. Bulgaria's claim for territorial outlet into the Aegean Sea impaired the Greek-Bulgarian relations, the Macedonian issue affected the Greek-Yugoslavian relations, the North-Epir issue and the question of the Cams influenced the Greek-Albanian relations, Kosovo marred the Yugoslavian-Albanian relations. Minority issues were perceived by the winners as a springboard for change of the borders. During the World War II Balkan conflicts took on tragic dimensions. Since Communism failed as an internationalist ideology, it was basically national issues under ideological guise that affected the relations between Balkan communist states, and Greece's relations with some Balkan communist countries as well. The topics discussed in each semester will depend on the period which will be opted for (1832-1918, 1918-1941, 1941-1945, 1945-1989).
