Course Content (Syllabus)
The course will examine the Byzantine administration and institutions from the 4th to the 15th century. The main features of the administrative structures will be analysed and their evolution during the Early, Middle and Late Byzantine period will be studied. The institutional changes introduced by the emperors will be presented and the function and effectiveness of the administrative system will be examined. The main features of the military and ecclesiastical organization will be also presented.The relevant primary sources will be studied and interpreted and the students will write papers on the administration and institutions of the Byzantine State. Description
Students will have to study weekly specific book chapters and articles (in Greek and in other languages) and present, orally or in written, brief reports of their critical reading. They will also have to study and comment on specific sources regarding the provincial administration of the Early Byzantine period. Students' evaluation will depend on their weekly presentations, their ability to argue and to answer complicated questions based on bibliography and the relevant sources, as well as on the final paper they will deliver at the end of the semester.
