Learning Outcomes
Students who attend the course are expected to • understand the theoretical questions and various approaches concerning the nature and mechanisms of the Byzantine economy • learn the basic features of the Byzantine economy (sectors, stages of development, economic structures, financial and social institutions, fiscal administration and mechanisms, legal framework) • familiarize with the financial and fiscal terminology • comprehend the interdependence of economic and social structures • become aware of methodological and practical issues related to their field of study • practice their skills to form and present (orally and in written) ideas and arguments.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Economic and social history of Byzantium The seminar studies aspects of the economic and social history of Byzantium. We will present and discuss the general characteristics and the different phases of growth and decline of the Byzantine economy. In addition, we will focus on issues related to the rural economy, to the small industry and crafts, trade and the role of the state in the economy. At the same time, we shall examine the interconnection between the economic and social structures, the various social classes and subgroups and their different economic potential and behaviour. The students will familiarise with the modern historiographical approaches and reflections in several of the above issues and will develop a critical attitude towards various interpretations and opposing proposals. 1st week: Presentation of the topic. Discussion on the technics for the writing and presentation of scientific essays. Explanation of the prescriptions and guidelines 2nd week: Modern Historiography for the study of the economy and society of Byzantium – Presentation of historiographic trends and different approaches 3rd week: Historical sources for the study of the economy and society of Byzantium 4th week: Rural economy in Byzantium – Discussion on secondary bibliography and analysis of primary sources 5th week: Small industry and crafts – Discussion on secondary bibliography and analysis of primary sources 6th week: Trade in Byzantium – Discussion on secondary bibliography and analysis of primary sources 7th week: The role of the state in the economy – Discussion on secondary bibliography and analysis of primary sources 8th week: Interconnection between economic and social structures. The economic thought of the Byzantines – Discussion on secondary bibliography and analysis of primary sources 9th - 13th weeks: Oral presentation of the students' essays

Description
Students are to study specific book chapters and articles (in Greek or in a foreign language) and present (orally or in written) brief reports of their critical reading every week. They will also have to study and comment on specific Byzantine sources. Students' evaluation will depend on their weekly presentations, their ability to argue and to answer complicated questions based on bibliography and the relevant sources.
