Learning Outcomes
Students who attend the course are expected to
• understand the scientific field of Historical Geography; the wide and varied research subject of the latter studies the various phases of the Earth's surface and regions over time under the interaction of natural, biological and cultural forces; it also studies Μan in the place where he lives (i.e. Anthropogeography of the past).
• study the geographical area of Byzantium, that is to say, the areas and residential landscapes of the eastern Mediterranean world during the Middle Ages, as well as the development and interaction of organized human life within its boundaries.
• familiarize themselves with the methodology of historical and geographic research; also with the methodological and practical issues usually arising from the researcher’s involvement within the specific field of study.
• approach the types of sources of Historical Geography (textual information, material remains, place names, natural conditions).
• practice their skills in finding and exploiting the relevant scientific modern bibliography as well as to present orally and in written their ideas and arguments.

Course Content (Syllabus)
ΙΒΥ 705: "Historical geography of the Byzantine world"
The seminar focuses on the scientific branch of Historical Geography, with emphasis on studying the geographical area (land and sea world) of Byzantium and the development, evolution and interaction of organized human life within its boundaries.
Its main objective is the in-depth familiarization of postgraduate students with the methodoly of historical ang geographic research.
During the courses they shall be examined:
(1) The research field of Historical Geography.
(2) The decline of Geography and geographic studies and knowledge after the Late Antiquity.
(3) The level of geographical knowledge within the limits of the Byzantine world.
(4). The main geographical regions and landscapes of Byzantium.
(5) The climatic conditions and changes in the natural environment after the Late Antiquity.
(6) The economic exploitation of land and sea by the Byzantines.
(7) The transport networks (road system etc.) within the Byzantine state.
(8) The internal and external borders of Byzantium, the territorial annexes and land losses.
(9) The development of administrative / ecclesiastical organization and monasticism within the Byzantine geographical space.
(10) The settlements (cities, villages etc.) and residential networks of Byzantium.
(11) The Byzantine place names (toponymy). Student's presentations.
(12) The populations and languages. Student's presentations.
(13). The sources for the study of the Historical geography of the Byzantine World. Student's presentations.
The participants will study the source material and modern bibliography, write papers and make oral presentations on topics and problems relating to the Historical Geography of the Byzantine world.

Student Assessment
Description
Students will have to study weekly specific book chapters and articles (in Greek and other languages) and present, orally or in written, brief reports of their critical reading.
Participants will also have to study and comment on specific medieval sources.
Students' evaluation will depend on their weekly presentations, their ability to argue and to answer complicated questions based on bibliography and the relevant sources and their final written papers.
