Learning Outcomes
Students who attend the course are expected to
• become familiar with the analytical categories of perception, identity and space as tools of historical research, and with the study of travel narratives
• understand how medieval Europe perceived the byzantine culture, and vice versa.
• comprehend their cultural encounters.

1st week: Introduction to the analytical categories of perception and identity
2nd week: Introduction to the analytical category of space
3rd week: Introduction to the analytical category of space and to the study of the travel naratives
4th week: Crusades: the construction of the byzantine otherness
5th week: Crusades: the construction of the byzantine otherness
6th week: The encounters between Byzantines and Latins in the Latin dominions
7th week: Manuel II's trip in Europe
8th week: The Council of Florence (1431-1449)
9th week: Cristoforo Buondelmonti's (1386-1430) travel to Byzantium
10th week: Bertrandon de la Broquière's (1420-1459) travel to Byzantium
11th week: Cyriacus of Ancona's (1391-1453) travel to Byzantium

Student Assessment
Description
Students will have to study weekly specific bibliography (in Greek or English) and present, orally or in written, brief reports of their critical reading. They will also have to study and comment on specific sources of High Middle Ages. At the end of semester they have to present orally and then submit a written essay of c. 4000 words. Students’ evaluation will depend on their weekly presentations and their final written essay.
