Learning Outcomes
Students who attend the course are expected to
• understand the theoretical questions concerning the relations between the Byzantine Empire and the Slavs settled in Greece end of the 6th and in the 7th centuries
• learn about the missionary work of Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia and the spread of their legacy first in Bulgaria (also Ohrid area) and later all over the Slavic world
• compare the social and cultural patterns of Byzantium with those of the medieval Russian state
• familiarize themselves with the process of the development of the so-called Byzantine Commonwealth
• to become sensitive to methodological and practical issues related to their field of study
• practice their skills to present orally and in written their ideas and arguments.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The seminar focuses first (through the study of byzantine and slavic sources) on the settlement of slavic groups in Greece during the Middle Ages and the slavic influence (for example slavic toponyms all over the Greece) till nowadays. The course continues with the study of the main fields of byzantine influence on Western, Eastern and Southern Slavs. The role of the Christianization and its contribution to the political, ecclesiastical, cultural and social development of the slavic state will also be discussed. Empasis is given to the creation of Kievan Rus' and its development into an orthodox superpower, having strong ties with the Byzantine Empire.
1st week
We examine the origins, the homeland and the migrations of the Slavs all over Europe, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. We also read passages from the oldest Byzantine sources about the Slavs
2nd week
The second lecture is devoted to the appearance of the Slavs on Byzantine borders, the first Slav states, their rulers and the relations with the Byzantine empire. We talk about the foundation of the First Bulgarian State (681), tsar Symeon and the Proto-bulgarian Inscriptions.
3rd week
We examine the “Miracles of Saint Demetrius” (Miracula Sancti Demetrii), a 7th –century collection of homilies, accounting the miracles performed by the patron saint of Thessaloniki. It is a significant source of the city of Thessaloniki and Macedonia in general, especially in relation to the Slavic invasions and settlements. We read and comment also passages from other Byzantine sources (Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus and the Chronicle of Monemvasia) as well
4th week
We deal with the Byzantine mission of Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia and the political and religious motives of Prince Rastislav. The Thessalonian Apostoles of Slavs influenced the development of all Slavic people, they created the first Slavic alphabet and a written Slavic language. So Byzantium had a convenient opportunity to expand Byzantine culture throughout the Slavic world. We read passages from Slavic (in Greek translation), Byzantine and Latin sources about the Cyrillo-methodian mission (Lives of Cyril and Methodius, Lives of Clemens of Ohrid and Naum, Letters of Popes etc.)
5th week
This lecture is devoted to the Legacy of Cyril and Methodius in the world of the Slavs (profane and ecclesiastical literature and law). In the newly established Bulgarian state, especially in the region of Ohrid (Ohrid School), Cyrillo-methodian work found the best conditions for further development
6th week
We talk about the state of tsar Samuel (976-1018) and its relations with the Byzantine Empire and the Slavic states in the Balkans. We analyze the written sources about this state (passages from Ioannis Skylitzes, Samuel’s inscription and the Inscription of Ivan Vladislav) and its monuments (Basilica of St Achilles in Small Prespa Lake and the content of the tombs there
7th week
The harmonious relations between Byzantines and Slavs in Macedonia due to the passages from Ioannes Kaminiates, the correspondence of Demetrius Chomatenus and the Acts of Mount Athos are the issue of this lecture
8th week
We examine the Serbian medieval legal texts and compare the Nomocanon of Saint Sava (Krmčija) with the Code of Stefan Dušan. We read articles in Greek translation and try to find their old Slavic (from the unwritten common law) or byzantine origins.
9th week
This lecture is devoted to the Christianization of Kievan Rus’, the role of Princess Olga of Kiev and the baptism of Vladimir I (988). We talk also about the Rus’-Byzantine-treaties (907, 911, 945) and read passages from the Nestor’s Primary Chronicle.
10th week
We study the Byzantine influence upon the Slavs of Greece and the Balkan Slavs as well as the Byzantine influence on Russia and Eastern Europe (literature, architecture, painting, onomatology ect.).
11th week
This lecture is devoted to the study of the Slavic places in Greece, especially in Macedonia. Thanks to the publications of the Archives of Mount Athos (in the series Archives de l’Athos), and of the Ottoman sources (Defters, etc.) we know that from the late 10th century Slavic toponyms, micronyms, hydronyms etc. were quite common. These toponyms help us to study the Slavic toponymy in general

Student Assessment
Description
Students will have to study weekly specific book chapters and articles (in Greek or English) and present, orally or in written, brief reports of their critical reading. They will also have to study and comment on byzantine and slavic (in Greek translated) sources about byzantine-slavic relations. Students' evaluation will depend on their weekly presentations, their ability to argue and to answer complicated questions based on bibliography and the relevant sources.
