Learning Outcomes
We seek to make sure that students 1) are acquainted with the rich background of the authors under discussion 2) are in command of the modern critical debate on the various issues, 3) are familiar with the critical tools for each period and genre, and 4) are intellectually confident in presenting their critical work.
Course Content (Syllabus)
This course studies the changing perceptions of female identity in literature from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. We shall begin by assessing the critical tools of feminist theory, its achievements and limits, particularly in relation to literary criticism today, especially when earlier literature is concerned. We shall then proceed to discuss in depth literature coming from many genres and periods. We are interested in rethinking conventional attitudes towards periods and authors.

Student Assessment
Description
Students take a final written examination at the end of the semester. They can also give short presentations throughout the semester. A longer research paper is strongly recommended, yet optional.
