Learning Outcomes
The students of the course are expected to
- approach and critically analyse the architectural creation within the wider political, social and cultural context of each period
- investigate the diachronic design principles that inspired the architectural creation of each period and how they have survived up to nowadays
- enrich their theoretical background and methodological tools in the field of Documentation and Restoration of monuments
- gain an insight of the contribution of History of Architecture in providing to young architects spiritual and aesthetic values, critical approach to historical memory and a comprehensive humanistic education

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course aims at familiarizing students with the architecture of the geographic space of East Mediterranean -focusing on the Aegean World and the wider Greek area- from Prehistoric Times, Antiquity and the Roman Era to the Byzantine, Post-Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
Main subjects of the course are
- Great Bronze Age civilisations in the Aegean World (Minoan, Mycenaean)
- Greek antiquity (Archaic, Classic and Hellenistic periods)
- Roman and Late Roman era
- Early, Middle and Late Byzantium
- Post-Byzantine and East Islamic architecture
- Greek Vernacular architecture of the 18th-19th centuries
The architecture of each period is approached and critically analysed within the wider political, social and cultural context

Final written examination
During class, students may undertake a brief bibliographic research (e.g. study and concise report on the contents of a book or paper)
Erasmus students' assessment is based on a written essay, on a topic of their choice, supervised by one of the members of the teaching staff (languages: english, french, italian)
