Learning Outcomes
The course focuses on the reasoning of the interconnections between individual, environmental and material / non-material networks. During the course, students are invited to critically explore the implications of the suspended linear forms for transport, observation and recreation and to explore alternative environments (technologically mediated urban places and objects) in order to maximize the operating program of the bridge. Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to: • be introduced with the key features of constructing transitional patterns upon water and to understand the role of architecture in the form-making process of the bridge • understand the role of transitional theories (from the philosophical and psychological to the technical and spatial field) and its particularities within the architectural education • familiarize themselves with the design and organization of public space above water • practice themselves in the analysis and interpretation of the synthetic process through the production of cross-sections in physical models

Course Content (Syllabus)
The studio introduces the 9th semester students to the design thinking and process of the construction of Transition - namely Bridging Design. It explores critically the role of the form in the construction of the transition "at the other side", shifting the compositional process and the specific conditions of the place, such as the act of hovering over the natural, being detached and distant from the ground, negotiating with the indifferent void that marks the internal paths of the bridge. The students are asked to investigate the design of a mediated spatial experience above water which, according to Bachelard, belongs to the phenomenology of the verb inhabit: an emerging type of space-appropriation in the city characterized neither by the mere bodily presence in open space nor by the stereotyped program of the bridge as a linear transport and movement tool. As a respond to this emergence, the design studio explores the synthetic, multifunctional and social dimension of the mediated alternative: a collective form of living above the water that enhances the transitional passage “at the other side”. The methodological approach of the studio can be summarized in two different -but interrelated- pathways: first, those projects aiming to identify the meeting point of architecture with its material limits and second, those who exceed these limits, approaching an inaugural dialectic between the transition and its phantasmagoria.
