Course Content (Syllabus)
The main subjects taught in the course are: Contemporary urban problems and planning policies. Basic elements of the European planning systems. The strategic and regulative character of urban plans. Basic elements of the Greek planning system: levels, content, institutional framework, agents, competencies and planning procedures. The implementation of urban planning (policies and instruments). Types of urban plans: European and Greek examples. The course is project based and, in terms of spatial scale, covers a small city or a municipality of a larger city. The project concerns the elaboration of an urban plan in two levels: Firstly, at a strategic-framework level, such as the General Urban Plan, the students get familiar with an overall strategy and regulation of urban growth and development. Secondly, at a more detailed level, such as a local plan, the students elaborate a plan of one or more urban units (design of street-layout, land-use and building regulations). The elaboration of the project follows specific stages and a unified methodology for all student groups.
