Learning Outcomes
This module will provide students with the skills access to current scientific data on factors influencing auditory perception in everyday life awareness of the possibility of individuals (children & adults) experiencing hearing issues in the presence of a normal audiogram acknowledgement of the need for multidisciplinary approach in auditory perception issues: to suspect (C)APD to categorise (C)APD into developmental, acquired or secondary. knowledge of Diagnostic guidelines detailed history taking, knowledge of co-existing disorders or pathologies management possibilities will all be addressed.
General Competences
  • Apply knowledge in practice
  • Adapt to new situations
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Generate new research ideas
Course Content (Syllabus)
3rd Psychiatric Department. Auditory perception extends beyond hearing sensitivity, as measured by the pure tone audiogram, including processing of auditory elements essential to speech segregation. Auditory processing is linked to language and speech skills and may influence cognition, short term memory and attention. This module will provide students with current knowledge and research on auditory processing evaluation as an ecological approach to functional hearing. Auditory neuroscience elements will be made available to medical students and subsequently will be incorporated in pathologies and disorders were auditory processing is abnormal. Auditory neuroplastisity will be addressed through the superior auditory processing skills exhibited by professional musicians and expanded with auditory training activities that are used to treat children, adults and the elderly for (Central) Auditory Processing Disorder- (C) APD. Pathologies that may include (C)APD are neurodevelopment disorders (Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyslexia, Specific Language Impairment), schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment. Lessons Neuroanatomy & Neurophysiology of Auditory Neuroscience Evaluation of hearing in the clinical setting Dichotic Digits Speech in Noise Perception Learning & Auditory Processing Auditory perception of music Neuroplasticity of the auditory nervous system (Central) Auditory Processing Disorder- basic elements-Techniques on how to suspect APD-Diagnosis of APD Co-morbidity of APD Neurodevelopmental Disorders & Auditory Processing Adults, vertigo, tinnitus & central auditory processing The elderly, presbyacusis ,mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease and (C)APD Management of APD Erasmus medical students (students attending psychology or any other discipline interested in auditory neuroscience are eligible to register as well) are kindly requested apart from electronically registering for this lesson to send me an email at viliad@auth.gr with their details.
