Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to recognize the sedimentary rocks in field and laboratory observation, they can take the right decisions for the right techniques which should be considered a sedimentary formation, they will solve problems concerning the nature and origin of sedimentary rocks and eventually they will be able to classify sedimentary rocks (clastic, chemical, biogenic) according to the internationally applicable standards of classification. Furthermore, in laboratory courses provide specialized knowledge about how to process and study of sedimentary rocks, supplies necessary for a geologist at all stages of his/her professional career.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Origin. Sedimentation processes. Texture. Statistical parameters. Constituents of sediments. Classification. Clastic sediments (Conglomerates-Breccias-Sandstones-Mudrocks-Clays). Diagenesis of sandstones, mudrocks and clays. Flysh-Molasse. Laterites-bauxites. Volcaniclastic sediments (Tuffs). Chemical and biogenic sediments (Evaposites-Limestones-Dolomites-Travertines-Silisic sediments-Phosphorites-Carbonaceous sediments). Sedimentary rocks of Greece. Laboratory exercises.
