Learning Outcomes
Upon the successful completion of this course, students will have knowledge on the preservation and protection of wood and wooden structures, as well as the factors of which wood and wood based products are endangered. They will know the impregnation methods and impregnating substances used (categories, types,characteristics etc.),the interactions of wood (chemical composition, structure, etc.) with the impregnating substances, the way of choosing impregnation method, the preparation of wood for the impregnation process, the way of operation, the rules to be followed, the required facilities and the equipment of the impregnation industrial units. They will also know about the application of fire-fighting/retardant substances and the efficacy control of all the preservation methods.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Natural durability and degradation factors of wood and wood products. Wood and fluids relationships (in drying, steaming, impregnation and improvement processing). Protective impregnation (categories-types of chemicals, equipment, methods, selection criteria, technological conditions, facilities, rules of operation of impregnation industrial units, certification of impregnated timber, estimation of preservation method efficacy etc.). Fire protection of wood and ways of improving its dimensional stability. Evolution of preservation methods and impregnating substances.
