Introductory level knowledge of material science.
Learning Outcomes
When successfully completing the course, students will be in position to: • Handle themselves the optical microscope and the supporting software packages for image analysis. • Metallografically prepare samples employing the required equipment and chemical etching. • Study the quenching of metals through Jominy test. • Conduct macro- and micro-hardness measurements. • Study the surface properties of materials after surface treatments. • Establish the proper theoretical background and become familiar with experimental test rigs for studying materials properties, like: electron microscopy, impact test, etc.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Production of cast parts and assessment of their structure and properties. Heat treatments for phase transformation and related properties of metals. Experimental investigation of materials corrosion. Applications of surface treatments, characterization and assessment of surface properties. Metallography and optical microscopy of materials.

Student Assessment
Description
Students are evaluated with a written exam, covering the spectrum of the course field. The critical thinking, as well as the level of understanding the course are examined by theoretical questions, multiple choice and exercises in a percentile proportion of approx. 20, 20, 10%, respectively. The rest 50% concerns the evaluation of the laboratory performance of students. Among the evaluation criteria are included the participation in the labs, the quality of the produced results, as well as the quality and soundness of the technical report.
