Learning Outcomes
The major course objectives are: - To create an infrastructure in essential aspects of the Molecular Biology of the cell. - To help students comprehend how the cell's various molecular mechanisms can affect and regulate each other in order to maintain the cell's survival under different environmental conditions. - To provide the necessary knowledge on how the various interactions between various biomolecules (e.g. protein-protein and protein-nucleic acids interactions) contribute to the regulation of the cell's functions and fate. - To present current knowledge on the molecular mechanisms involved in the differential regulation of complex cellular processes (cell division, transcription, translation etc.) in response to the everchanging environmental conditions. - To provide the students with hands-on knowledge on basal technologies used in Molecular Biology through the execution of a predefined set of laboratory experiments.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Heredity, genes and DNA. Heredity and genes. Genes and enzymes. The identification of DNA as the genetic material. Genome structure and organization. Plant cell genome and genome structure of the subcellular organelles (mitochondria, plastids). DNA replication. The expression of the genetic information. Gene-protein relationships. The role of the messenger RNA. The genetic code. RNA viruses and reverse transcription. Transcription, RNA polymerase and transcription factors (classes, structure and functions). Transcriptional, post- transcriptional and translational regulation of gene expression. Protein sorting and its regulation. Signal transduction. Hormones and other signal transducing molecules and their receptors. Signal transduction through membrane-bound and intracellular receptors. Signal transduction pathways. Signal transduction and cytoskeleton. Introduction to the recombinant DNA. Restriction endonucleases. Generation of recombinant DNA molecules. Cloning vectors. Expression of cloned genes. Principles of DNA sequencing. DNA amplification through the use of polymerase chain reaction. Analysis of gene function. Genetic analysis using yeast cells. Introduction of mutation in cloned and cellular genes.

Student Assessment
Description
The evaluation of the students takes place at the end of the semester (spring semester) or during the September exam period. The exam dates and venues are scheduled by the Department of Pharmacy. The duration of the examination is 1 hour during which the students are asked to answer 20 RIGHT or WRONG questions and justify their answers. The questions are equivalent to each other and they all count for 0.5 points (0.1 point for RIGHT or WRONG (or negative 0.1 in case of an incorrect answer) and 0.4 for each justification). If a particular question is failed by all students then it is withdrawn and the students final grade is calculated based o n the remaining answers.
