Course Content (Syllabus)
This course centres on the interplay of linguistic evidence and theory construction. In particular, it examines data and investigates how these can form and shape linguistic theory in insightful ways. Given the focus on empirical evidence, students witness how, on the one hand, theories can be tested against application to data, and on the other hand, how data can resolve theoretical debates. Under examination will be: (i) new data, e.g. findings of artificial grammars or nonce words, (ii) experimental data, such as those resulting from psycholinguistic work, or (iii) data previously unnoticed or seen in a new light.
