Course Content (Syllabus)
This course focuses on the ways in which the arts can be a driving force and a tool for learning at all levels and stages of the educational process. Starting from the basic position around the concept of learning as a creative, experiential, interactive and ongoing process, the ultimate goal is to familiarize students with the use of classroom practices through which the arts strengthen teaching. Dance, music, theater, painting, photography, cinema, pottery, but even arts that traditionally do not have a primary role, such as pantomime, graffiti, comics, sewing, cooking, graphic design, puppetry, video games, etc. can be a trigger for learning not only as separate subjects in the school curriculum but also if they are assimilated into the teaching of different subjects. Music and rhythm, for example, are directly linked to mathematics, painting and photography can enhance the ability of observation that is related to the natural sciences, theater and cinema cultivate critical thinking and provide the necessary insight for students to approach literature, language or theoretical subjects, and so on. Through this course, students will be able to understand some of the basic ways in which the arts are intertwined both with each other and with the learning process. They will also be exposed to different practices related to their use in education, such as organizing exhibitions, group projects, peer teaching, performances, open courses, visits to other schools or (artistic) organizations, etc. At the end of the courses, they will be able to know how to utilize the arts as alternative and reinforcing teaching methods and, in addition, how to utilize the individual inclinations and skills of children, how to teach them to collaborate in groups and ultimately to experience learning as a positive and empowering experience of expression and discovery of both their personality and the world around them.
The assessment will be done through practical training/project by the students and a written assignment that will be a presentation and analysis of the project.
