Course Content (Syllabus)
‘Etymology and its relationship to the other branches of linguistics’ The primary aim of the course is to demonstrate that etymology involves more than the investigation of the origin of words. More specifically, the course focuses on the relationship between etymology and a) phonetics/phonology (its contribution to the tracing of tendencies and phonetic laws) b) morphology (interpretation of inflectional and derivational morphemes) c) language contact (investigation of the layers of loanwords) d) pragmatics (from etymology to pragmatics) e) dialectology
