As a result of taking the course students are expected to • understand the role of space in shaping economic phenomena • understand how the contemporary economy operates, from the local to the global scale, as well as the close links between local events and global phenomena, • Familiarize themselves with the range of policies used to enhance spatial development

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course covers a wide range of theoretical approaches to regional and urban development by analyzing both the basic concepts of space and site-selection factors, as well as the role of geography in development. The course is divided into three basic modules. The first includes the main theoretical discussions, with particular emphasis on the most recent ones; the second concerns regional / urban / local development policies, while the third deals with a series of specific issues of particular importance for the understanding of the spatial dimensions of the modern world. At the same time, each of the lectures is based on three categories of material: a) Material from the basic textbooks b) Extensive bibliography (mainly international) c) Case studies

Student Assessment
Description
Student evaluation will be done through: A. Written examination at the end of the semester (40% of the total score) B. Evaluation of weekly contributions * (60% of the total score) ---------------------------------------- * Students will undertake presentations in 10 of the teaching weeks. The papers will be prepared based on the indicative literature to be distributed in the first week and in direct co-operation with the lecturer. Each presentation will be a critical assessment of the existing literature around the subject under consideration Each postgraduate student must sign in for: - 2 issues as Rapporteur (1st and 2nd); - 1 subject as Commentator (Discussant) At the end of the semester, each postgraduate student will submit the texts of his / her contributions. The evaluation of weekly contributions (ie the criteria and their relative weight for category (B) of the overall assessment) will be based on: a) the written texts of the two papers that will be submitted at the end of the semester (60%); b) the oral presence in the lectures both as a Rapporteur or Commentator and with the general participation in all lectures (40%).
