Course Content (Syllabus)
The course will deal with the influence exerted upon the theory of language change from similar ideas in the area of the theory of evolution in general. Specific topics to be addressed include: methods and techniques of historical linguistics, August Schleicher and Charles Darwin, the Neogrammarian School, the comparative method and its limits, sociolinguistic parameters, language history and biology, cladistics and language development, genetic, areal and typological classification of languages, etc.
