Learning Outcomes
-The main objective of the course "Materials and socio-economic environment" is the analysis of the impact of materials science in society. Due to the fact that materials science involves different parts (research, education, technology, industrial exploitation) who mostly analyzed in the other courses, their effect on the economic and social status is a key factor that should be considered by a materials’ scientist. Therefore the complex relationship of materials - socio-economic environment is studied and analyzed through historical data, using examples, and through statistical analysis of economic data.
Course Content (Syllabus)
- Metallic alloys. The Fe-C system. Perlitic transformation. Steels and alloyed steels. Thermal treatments. Martensitic transformation. Isothermal transformation. TTT-curves. Cast-irons. Physical properties and alloying phenomena. Natural ageing. Copper alloys. Brass. Bronzes. Light-metal alloys. Magnesium alloys. Aluminum alloys. Titanium alloys. Superalloys. Strengthening mechanisms. Powder metallurgy. Oxide-dispersion-strengthened superalloys.
- Ceramic materials: Ceramic raw materials, ceramics and ceramic products. Ceramic industry labotatory controls. Properties of ceramic products. Ball mills, sintering furnaces for ceramics, high technology ceramics (HTc).
- Amorphous materials. The amorphous state of mater. The formation of amorphous state, glass forming ability.
Identification and verification of the amorphous state. Crystallinity, grain boundaries, grain size, nanocrystalline materials.
Growth of amorphous materials, nucleation and crystal growth, TTT diagrams, glass transition thermodynamics and kinetics.
Amorphous metallic alloys, growth, properties and applications.
Crystallization of amorphous materials, examples. Properties of amorphous materials, the influence of heat treatment, surface crystallization, elasticity, viscosity, thermal stresses, annealing.
- Materials and Economic-Social Environment: to analyze the impact of materials on the economic and social environment. In this course the technology, research, technological developments and the industrial exploitation of materials is studied with regard to the impact on the economy and social environment. During the course are analyzed historical data and studied relationships and interactions of industry materials with society both globally and within the Greek territory. Also the course includes the impact of education in materials science to economic growth and social development.
