Basic knowledge of European and World Diplomatic/International History of the 20th century.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successfully completing the course, students are expected to be able to:
1. know the course of several major international issues after the end of World War II;
2. recognize the most important actors and factors that contributed to the outbreak, escalation and termination of international crises during the same period;
3. assess the relative importance of political, military and economic factors for the course of international affairs;
4. evaluate and utilize information on post-war international affairs;
5. possess sufficient historical background in order to comprehend approaches to international phenomena advanced by the different perspectives of International Law and International Relations.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Students are expected to deepen their knowledge of the history of international relations both during the Cold War and the post-Cold War era. To that end, the following general themes serve as main axes:
1. nuclear weapons, the likelihood of their use and the control of nuclear armaments;
2. interventions of the United States in third countries and crises of the Cold War;
3. the rapprochement between the United States and the People's Republic of China;
4. interventions of the Soviet Union in third countries and crises of the Cold War;
5. the termination of the Cold War;
6. post-Cold War crises.
These general themes are broken down into forty two specific topics, which the students are invited to elaborate upon. Student participation in the course is supported by topic-specific electronic dossiers, a list of publicly available electronic sources, and extensive bibliography. Since most sources are in English, a good knowledge of the language is mandatory.
