Course Content (Syllabus)
The course deals with issues of bilingualism and bilingual education. Points discussed in the first part include: •definitions and specifications of bilingualism •types of bilingualism •theories on second language acquisition •social and ideological parameters that influence second language acquisition, • language interaction and interrelation • In the second part, issues of educational policy are presented so that the educational assets of bilingualism are stressed and analyzed. Issues discussed involve: • bilingualism and its impact on the function and performance of a bilingual or prospective bilingual student • positive and negative learning environments • strategies and practices that facilitate the maintenance of the first and the acquisition of a second language in the multicultural classroom.
