Course Content (Syllabus)
Topics: 1. The problem of evil in contemporary philosophy: the logical problem (J.L. Mackie, A. Plantinga) and the evidential problem (W. Rowe). 2. The origins of evil: the Judaeo-Christian model, the Neoplatonic model. 3. Forms of evil (a): Death as the ultimate evil or death as non-evil: the Epicurean therapy, the Stoic indifference and the Christian attitude. 4. Forms of evil (b): The Matter: Neoplatonism and Manicheanism. 5. The meaning of evil: justified evil - the theodicies: - Platonic and Stoic theodicies - Soul-making theodicy (Irenaeus, J. Hick) - Free-will theodicy (Augustine) - Lisbon's earthquake and the best possible world (Leibniz, Voltaire) - Richard Swinburne's theodicy. 6. The unjustifiable evil: Job's story, the Holocaust.. 7. The banality of evil and narratives of evil. 8. The overcoming of theodicies.
