Learning Outcomes
The course is intended to provide fundamental knowledge on the properties of materials. By the end of the course, the student should be able -to describe the properties of different classes of materials and their relation to structure and microstructure -to use and interpret pictures, graphs and tables of materials properties -to perform relevant calculations -to understand criteria of materials selection, with emphasis on materials for electrotechnical and mechanical applications

Course Content (Syllabus)
Structure of solids: atoms, molecules and bonding, crystalline structure, structure defects, diffusion, phase diagrams. Mechanical properties, metals and alloys, corrosion. Electrical conductivity of materials: free electrons, metallic conductors, semiconductors, semiconductor materials and applications. Dielectric materials: polarization, losses, breakdown, materials and applications. Magnetic materials: magnetic moment, magnetic response, spontaneous magnetization, magnetic domains, magnetically soft and hard materials, magnetic losses, applications Optical properties and materials: optical absorption, photodiodes, solar cells, LEDs, laser diodes. Advanced materials and technologies. Availability and life cycle of materials - selection and design issues.
