Learning Outcomes
The aim of the course is the in depth understanding of educational research. During the module basic epistemological and theoretical positions related to a range of methods, methodologies and research strategies are analyzed so that students be able to decide the variety of methods they will use. Furthermore, the practical application of these methods' in real context is attempted and the ability of data handling, analysis and synthesis is also enhanced. Educational research ethics are discussed. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches are analyzed through the presentation of educational research reports and articles. By the end of the course students are expected to be able to: Critically evaluate the design and results of a range of educational studies Use a range of data collection quantitative and qualitative techniques Analyze, interpret, organize and present data using various means to address a variety of audiences Understand the aim and the process of educational research Understand the ways in which research is used to inform and improve the work of educational authorities and organizations.
General Competences
  • Apply knowledge in practice
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Work autonomously
  • Work in teams
  • Work in an international context
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Generate new research ideas

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course is predominantly based on the study and critical analysis of a variety of methodological perspectives as these are presented within the contents of recent research articles, reports, and studies. Through the design and implementation of short scale projects, students examine and organize different types of data and critically analyze the methods of data collection and analysis in order to end up with useful and practical results which answer to particular research questions. The basis types of research design that are presented within the course are experimental research, ex post fact or quasi-experimental research, survey methods, case study and action research.

The first assignment (mid term) is regarded with the critical appraisal and analysis of a published research study. The second assignment will be handed in the end of the course and will be based on the design and pilot implementation of a research project.
Student Assessment methods
  • Written Assignment (Formative, Summative)
  • Performance / Staging (Formative)
  • Report (Summative)
