Course Content (Syllabus)
The subject of the course “Museum Education” is the theoretical and educational approach of the museum as a non-formal / informal learning environment complementary to formal education with the aim to prepare the future teachers to be able to use these elements both in the classroom and in the context of various didactic activities in museums, archaeological sites, monuments, exhibitions, etc., for the intellectual, social and personal development of children of early education and first school age. The main thematic axes of the course are the following: a. the brief presentation of the evolution of museums with emphasis on their contemporary educational and social role, b. the theoretical background of Museum Education, the qualitative characteristics of learning in the museum and their importance for all children, c. the relationship between museum and school and the importance of culture in the education for all children, d. the methodological framework for the design of educational activities with an emphasis on learning theories and principles of Universal Design for Learning in order to respond to the heterogeneity of the student population (e.g. mixed ability classes, children with disabilities and / or special educational needs, multiculturalism, etc.), e. the connection of Museum Education to thematic areas of the Curriculum, art, intercultural education, local history, physical environment, technology, etc., through examples and similar practical, field activities and exercises, f. the use of a variety of media and materials (e.g. museum educational material) in the classroom and in museums, and g. the role of teachers as mediators between museum, school, children and parents.
