Learning Outcomes
In this course the student gains basic knowledge about diseases that influence the function of the neuromuscular system and how exercise can promote health for the respective patients. The neuromuscular diseases included in the course are the stroke, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, training methods such as mental training, aquatic therapy, therapeutic riding, and electrical stimulation are presented, as well as methods to improve sensory input.
The goal of the class is to understand the etiology of each disease and learn how to improve functional movements through exercise. Thank to the nature of the diseases, the student is guided on how to collaborate with other disciplines (neurologists, orthopedists, physical therapists), in order to develop and apply safe and beneficial exercise programs. Furthermore, the presentation of novice and original methods, gives the perspective to the student to apply innovative exercise programs in persons with neuromuscular diseases.
The theoretical background of the course is linked to practice by presenting specific exercise programs and giving the student the necessary tools to create his/her own programs.
After a successful graduation the student will be able to:
• know the basics of the pathophysiology of the neuromuscular diseases•
• organize and apply exercise programs adapted to populations with neuromuscular diseases
• adapt the exercise programs to the requirements of each individual.
• cooperate with other disciplines (medical doctors, physical therapists, nurses etc.) with ultimate goal to facilitate the health of the patient.
