Learning Outcomes
It is an introductory lesson about the principles of designing and teaching group based or personal yoga and pilates programs, aiming to provide a healthy lifestyle. The students through tis lesson, learn about the principles of yoga and pilates as forms of exercise, in order to understand their application into practice for a healthier lifestyle. The student aquires gets a conclusive idea about the designing and teaching methods of yoga and pilates in order to get a basic knowledge for other specification lessons. The aim of the lesson is to understand the importance of applying all these principles into practise in a scientific/professional setting. With the successful completion of the lesson the student will be able to: • understand the basic principles of designing and teaching yoga/ pilates exercise programs into practice. • to aquire the appropriate knowledge of yoga/pilates teaching methods, based on high level scientific manuals that contain updated knowledge in yoga/pilates. • distinguish the specific characteristics and needs in a group or individual of exercise participants, in a case study and evaluate and apply the appropriate program • use the basic asanas/poses, movements in yoga/pilates and the teaching methods, chooosing the most appropriate, or a combination of them, according to the specific situation, in a professional manner. • analyse and calculate the basic quantative and qualitative parameters (duration, frequency, repetitions poses, exercises, apparatus)in designing a yoga/pilates program • cooperate with classmates, in designing and presenting an exercise program plan in a case study, that includes choosing the basic poses / exercises and teaching methods (breathing, repetitions, duration, music) • to present information, ideas and solutions in a qualified and or non-qualified audience (oral presentation) and practical sessions (e.g. a pilates session with props - exercises, muscle groups, repetitions, props choice - swiss ball, rings – music)

What is Yoga - meaning - definitions - benefits - 8 paths of Yoga • Types of yoga in fitness - Asanas (definition - basic Asanas - variations - alignment). • Sun Salutation mild, A, B ) Pranayama (breathing) - meditation – relaxation. Pranayama and meditation benefits • exercise lesson plan - lesson oganisation - teaching methods. asanas indications-contraindications attention points • anatomy - kinesiology - physiology of yoga • Yoga & different populations Pilates • History of Pilates - What is Pilates. benefits of Pilates. basic principles of a pilates program - Modern Pilates". body alignment. • basic characteristics of the right body alignment of indivoduals in modern society. Final Practical assessment (60%)that includes performance and presentation of basic asanas/exercises and the presentation of a yoga/ or pilates program Final oral assessment(40%) that includes: - Analysis and application of concepts on a short case study - Problem solving about planning yoga and pilates programs - Comparative assessment in theory of yoga / pilates
