Course Content (Syllabus)
The course deals with the research and study of the various relations which formed between Byzantium and the Islamic world, Arabian and non-Arabian. It also helps in understanding of the reactions of Byzantine on the fact of arrival, on the scene of the history, of a nation with new and different socio-cultural claims.
1. Introduction
2. Sources and historiography.
3. The image of Islam in Byzantium. Byzantine historical texts.
4. The religious (sacred) geography beyond the Empire.
5. The Byzantine Empire in an era of accelerating changes.
6. The problems of Byzantium and the Islamic conquests.
7. Diplomatic relations and dialogue between Byzantium and the Islamic world.
8. The survival of the Christian population in Muslim Caliphs.
9. Conversions to Islam and Christianity.
10. Theological and polemical anti-Islamic writings.
11. Church and Islamic political authority in Syria.
12. Church and Islamic political authority in Palestine.
13. Church and Islamic political authority in Egypt.
