Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students:
- Will explore scientifically the interpretation and the meaning of the Divine Liturgy.
- Will understand the meaning of the symbolisms in the order and the content of the Divine Liturgy.
- Will deepen and relate the theological content of the Divine Liturgy with the whole theology of the Church.
- Will realize the different interpretative approaches of the interpretive works in the Divine Liturgy.
Course Content (Syllabus)
1. The Theology of symbols. The symbols in the Divine Liturgy.
2. Presentation of the liturgical commentary of Dionysius the Areopagite.
3. Presentation of the liturgical commentary of Maximus the Omologitis.
4. Presentation of the liturgical commentary of Nicolas Kabasilas.
5. Presentation of the liturgical commentary of Theodore the Studite.
6. Presentation of the liturgical commentary of Germanos of Constantinople.
7. Presentation of the liturgical commentary of Symeon of Thessaloniki.
8. The preparation of the Ministers.
9. Holy proskomedia. Symbolisms.
10. Theological - symbolic interpretation of the first part of the Divine Liturgy (beginning - prayers for catechumens).
11. Theological - symbolic interpretation of the second part of the Divine Liturgy (cherubic hymn - Eucharist).
12. Theological - symbolic interpretation of the Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified.
13. Partial issues of interpretation of the Divine Liturgy.
