In the context of Design Studio 5 students:
- Understand the concepts/issues and gain a focused understanding of the contemporary approaches that pertain to architectural design in the urban context
- Understand the commitments and opportunities offered by the urban environment for the development of architectural compositions
- Practice the application of simplified methodologies of identification, recording - representation and analysis of a localized urban environment
-Develop design skills in the creative composition of a building or complex of buildings serving mixed / hybrid building programs of medium/ high complexity
-Acquire techniques for the synthesis, organization and presentation of integrated architectural design compositions (rationale development, documentation, communication of proposals in successive stages of processing)
Course Content (Syllabus)
The design studio focuses on Architectural Design in the Urban Context, building upon the knowledge and skills gained through the students’ participation at the design studio 04EA10, which focuses on the relation of architectural design and the natural environment. The course deals with a program of medium/high complexity developed within the framework of the commitments and opportunities brought about by the integration of architectural design in the urban context.
The aim of the design studio is to allow students the possibility of architectural compositional explorations and experimentations in the urban context, approaching architectural synthesis in its entirety, from the initial planning stages to the final design and implementation stages. The design studio explores a building program of medium/high complexity, building upon the cognitive knowledge and compositional experience of previous courses and design studios. The building program may, indicatively, include design for complex/hybrid habitation/work programs in the urban context.
Students are evaluated by the teaching team of the course. The evaluation takes into consideration a set of criteria, such as the comprehension of the design agenda set by the course, the level of response to the compositional and design tasks, active participation in the learning procedure, the quality of the work submitted, etc.
