Learning Outcomes
Within the framework of the course, it is expected that students will • understand the theoretic and historical areas of musicology • familiarize with the planning and organizing of a scientific module (project) • become acquainted with the basic features of qualitative research • become familiar with the methodological and practical issues, that may arise from the involvement of the researcher in the field he studies • practise in analyzing and interpreting qualitative data.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course is targeted to first-year students and comprises a kind of introduction to the various disciplines of musicology. The basic knowledge about the development of Musicology as a discipline is offered in the course and its the specific sectors are examined analytically and its scientific-artistic fields as well. Specifically the following thematic units will be examined: 1. fields of Musicology: a) historical musicology b) Systematic musicology c) Applied Musicology d) Ethnomusicology 2. the relations of musicology to the other sciences and its development. 3. The fields of applying musicology to the various areas of contemporary music life (performance and interpretation of musical works, music review, music education, music technology, discography, publishing musical works and scientific research, etc.). 4. Basic musicological literature (sources, books, magazines and various special foreign language versions). 5. the methods of musicological work (syntax of a scientific work, reading and musicological analysis of specific texts, specific terminology, methods of analysis and documentation modes). 6. the science of musicology in Greece: sources, difficulties, targets and problematic areas.
