Learning Outcomes
This course will enable students 1. to get the basic knowledge in seven of the main thematic cycles of Byzantine Musical Studies 2. to come in contact with the essential bibliography of Byzantine Musical Studies 3. to get familiar to the sound-world of Byzantine Music, to recognize and comment upon the musical texture of chosen pieces 4. to work with hymnographic sources and to write an essay according to the rules of scientific writing.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course offers a first systematic, scientific and living approach to the Byzantine musical culture. The course is organized according to the following seven thematic cycles: a. Elements of Byzantine culture (white mnemotechnic cards), b. Byzantine Musicology (red cards), c. The liturgical topos (green cards), d. Hymnography (pink cards), e. Music theory, notation and modal system (yellow cards), f. Melopoeia (blue cards), g. Secular music (orange cards). In parallel, the students are introduced to the scientific work with sources and are informed about how to write a scientific essay, as well as how to listen to Byzantine chant. A visit to the Museum of Byzantine Culture and field work concerning the Akathistos Hymn complete the course.

Description
The student assessment is based on the following: 1.-2. Two progress tests (the first one according to the themes recorded on the white, red and green mnemotechnic cards, the second one constructing on the themes of the yellow and pink cards, and the Akathistos Hymn) 3. A third test written during the exams period (based on the blue and orange cards) 4. A brief oral examination consisting in the recognition of a music example contained on the CDs given at the course (whole CD 1 and 4, and the first track of CD 2).
