Learning Outcomes
After successfully completing the course, students will become acquainted with characteristic myths on the activities of the Dodecatheon and secondary deities, the achievements of heroes and heroines, the various demonic and fictional creatures. They will examine the uses of myths as both symbols of public identity and expression of official ideology through the means of descriptive arts -sculpture, pottery, painting, minor arts, mosaics- and coins. Moreover, they will be able to examine the reasons for using specific mythological themes in the ancient Greek and Roman world as well as the issue of the preservation of ancient Greek myths and the way they were perceived in subsequent periods.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Mythology, the narrative of the stories concerning the gods, heroes as well as their own cult practices was an essential element of the ancient Greek civilization; from early on it was associated with the formation of public identity and visibility of the official ideology of city-states and rulers. The course approaches the use of myth as a symbol of public identity and expression of official ideology through its depiction in works of descriptive arts -sculpture, pottery, painting, minor arts, mosaics- and coins. The essays will examine the selection and promotion of specific mythological themes in the ancient Greek and Roman world, and will explore the preservation of ancient Greek myths and the way they were perceived in subsequent periods.
Week 1: General characteristics of the ancient Greek myths. Sources for the study of myths: ancient literature and visual arts.
Week 2: Myth in public and private life of ancient Greeks.
Week 3: Myth and coinage.
Week 4: The preservation of ancient Greek myths and their interpretation in later periods.
Week 5: Student presentations: Description and discussion of artifacts with mythological scenes.
Week 6: Student presentations: Description and discussion of artifacts with mythological scenes.
Week 7: The projection of mythological themes from antiquity to modern times. The case of Nike.
Week 8: Visit and practice at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.
