(a) To offer students a wide and global survey of the development of historiography in ancient Greece.
(b) To help students recognize the changes in various works of historiography, depending on the era and the methodology of each ancient historian.
(c) To help students master specific aspects of ancient Greek prose, making them familiar with advanced issues of language and style as these are displayed in various historiographic works in antiquity.
Course Content (Syllabus)
This class is designed exclusively for classics majors. The object of the course is the thorough linguistic and interpretive analysis of ancient Greek works of historiography. It examines in depth specialized aspects of ancient Greek historiography, focusing on specific works studied in the original Greek, and examining them by means of both traditional and modern trends in classical scholarship.
