ANCIENT GREEK OF THE SECONDARY EDUCATION LEVEL
Learning Outcomes
The aim of the course is the familiarization with the Ancient Greek language of the Saint Scriptures and of the patristic and ecclesial texts. The course focuses on ensuring the unbroken historical continuity of the Greek language and on understanding of the major grammatical and syntactic cases of the Ancient Greek occurred in the ancient Greek texts of the Biblical and Christian literature.
By the successful completion of the course, the students should be able:
  • to understand the historical development of the Greek language and the reasons that shaped the language of the biblical and ecclesial texts
  • to discern the difference between the Greek language of the biblical texts and the Greek of the patristic and ecclesial texts
  • to recognize the grammatical and syntactic phenomenons of the ancient, biblical and patristic-ecclesial language
  • to work out an ancient Greek text, as well as a patristic and ecclesial one, so as to understand it and translate it.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Τhe history of the Greek language is presented briefly, focusing to the Koine Hellenistic and to the language of the Fathers and the of the ecclesial texts, and exposing the reasons that shaped their linguistic form. Anthologized texts of the periods under consideration are studied, the basic grammatical and syntactical features of the Ancient Greek language are illustrated and consolidated by exercises, whereas the vocabulary of the texts is commented semantically. The differences of the language between the biblical and the ecclesial texts are highlighted and the proper linguistic approach is taught.

Student Assessment
Description
A two-hour written examination in translation and commentary of a taught unit of text. The classroom participation (5%), the participation in the exercises (15%) and the attendance of scientific conferences (10%) are assessed in addition.
