Learning Outcomes
On completion of the module the students will be able to :
1. describe and analyze the sources of ecclesiastical law
2. describe and analyze the domestic law of Orthodox Church
3. describe the State relations with :
a. religious communities in general
b. the Orthodox Church of Greece
4. describe and analyze specific matters of the Law of the Orthodox Church
of Greece. Special discussion is undertaken concerning her statutory legislation in Greek
territory.
5. describe and analyze the particular ecclesiastical regimes in Greek territory, i.e. provinces
of Ecumenical Throne, Mount Athos, semi-Autonomous Church of Crete, Dodecanese.
Course Content (Syllabus)
This module introduces and examines the study of the Law of the Orthodox Church and
the relations between the State and religious communities in general. It examines also
how religious groups organize themselves within the State legal framework. The study
of the right of Religious Freedom is also part of the course. The Law of the Orthodox
Church of Greece and the particular ecclesiastical regimes in Greek territory, i.e. the
Church of Crete, Mount Athos (Agion Oros) and the ecclesiastical provinces of the Dodecanese,
are also examined.
